The main navigation bar/menu labels match the current Categories and Sub-Categories we have created. Hopefully we can assign all content to one of these. As more content is added to the site we can create more Sub-Categories that will display as drop down menu items on the navigation bar beneath the main Categories (like the existing Contact us beneath The association).
Users can also use the search field to look for content (I’ll work out soon how to get it on the Home page as well!). Down the track we can add “tags” to content. These are labels other than the Category names that you will also be able to search by.
We can update the Home page by changing the lead item (currently “Welcome friends…”). The content of the five columns beneath that lead item will continually update a listing of the most recent posts in each Category.
WordPress, the platform on which the site is built, allows us to add a lot more to the site using what they call plugins and widgets. For instance, the image gallery plugin “NextGEN gallery” has been installed so we can display collections of photos. If demand requires we can add more… such as discussion forums. Let us know what kind of content and functionality you would like us to consider adding.
At the moment we have created four kinds of website users:
1. The general public who can:
— view everything except what’s listed under Sharing; and
— comment on those posts that allow replies.
2. Bushlanders such as yourself who register as Contributors and, as described on the Home page, can:
— view everything as well as what’s listed under Sharing;
— create, edit, submit and delete their own articles, known as “posts” including if they are Sharing posts (using the “Publishing a post checklist”) and via the Dashboard (scroll over “Chewton Bushlands Association” in the top left corner of your browser window on the dark grey bar then click on “Dashboard”); and
— choose to receive email notification of newly published posts in chosen Categories, via the Dashboard > Subscribe2.
3. Bushlanders registered as Editors (currently Karen and Cate) who, in addition to the above, can:
— edit all posts.
4. Bushlanders registered as Admin… for the time being that’s Mark, who can:
— do everything, including, initially at least, sorting, categorising and publishing all content.
